One of our most emotionally revealing and talented singer-songwriters” – Vanity Fair

Joseph Arthur grew up in the 1970s and 80s in Ohio. After starting out with piano lessons, he soon realised he could create his own music, so took to the instrument to write his own songs and eventually playing in high school bands.

After graduating, Joseph dreamed of becoming a world-class jazz or fusion bass player, but when his demo tape made it’s way to Peter Gabriel, his talent for songwriting and lyrics was quickly noticed, and was signed to the Real World Records label within months.

His third album, Come To Where I’m From, features his signature track In the Sun, later covered by Peter Gabriel and then R.E.M’s Michael Stipe and Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

His latest and fifth album on Real World Records, The Family was released in June 2016 and the 15th anniversary re-issue of Joseph’s third album Redemption’s Son is released in June 2017.

Joseph contributed a song for the soundtrack to the film The Bone Collector. He also wrote music for the soundtrack to Hell’s Kitchen.

As well as a musician, Joseph is an acclaimed writer, painter, sculptor and Grammy-nominated visual artist, with his work displayed in galleries around the world. He is also a prolific writer, principally of poetry but has also written a children’s book.
